Pet Poison Prevention Tips

Pet Poison Prevention Tips from our North Austin Veterinarian

Dog with veterinarian who was treated from poison

Our North Austin vet here at Dessau Vet Clinic would like to remind all pet owners that March is National Poison Prevention Months—meaning there has never been a better time to make sure you're aware of some of the most common signs of poisoning in pets and how to protect your beloved pets from known household poisons and toxins!

Protect Your Pet from Known Toxins and Poisons

Unfortunately, our veterinary team sees instances of accidental pet poisoning quite frequently. What many pet owners don't realize is that toxins and poisons can often be found around the house. For example, did you know that grapes and raisins can be toxic to both dogs and cats? Did you know that the popular flower known as the lily can also be toxic to cats? Even a small amount of pollen can prove fatal if ingested by a house cat.

Some other common pet toxins and poisons that may be found in your household include:

  • Cleaning products and chemicals
  • Insecticides and rodent bait
  • Many types of houseplants

In addition to doing your best to keep these known poisons out of your pet's reach at all times, it is important that you understand what to do if your pet does ingest a poison or toxin. For starters, make sure to seek veterinary care right away if you have witnessed your pet ingest something dangerous. If you have a wrapper or label from the item, bring it into the vet's office with you, as this may help the veterinary team provide your pet with the best possible treatment.

If you didn't witness your pet ingest a toxin, you should still be on the lookout for signs such as:

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive drooling
