Just like people, pets can have allergies. Usually, these allergies manifest themselves as skin problems, but they may result in other symptoms. If you feel your cat or dog is suffering from allergies, contact our dermatology specialist in Austin at the Dessau Vet Clinic.
What Are Allergies?
Allergies are an immune system response to foreign bodies. These include food allergies, skin allergies and environmental allergies. Sometimes allergies overlap, which can make them difficult to diagnose and treat.
Symptoms of Allergies
The most common symptom of allergies in pets is scratching and biting. This makes the skin red and inflamed, which can make the itching worse and can cause an oozing rash and irritation. Hair loss is another symptom of itching, irritation, and infection. This can result is large patches of exposed skin that often looks dry and flaky.
Part of a cat’s normal grooming routing is licking, but both dogs and cats can lick excessively when they have allergies. You may also see your pet pawing at their ears. Ear infections are often related to allergies, which can be uncomfortable and even painful.
Respiratory issues are not as common but can be a symptom of an allergic reaction, especially in cats. If you notice your cat is having trouble breathing or is coughing and wheezing, it could be a symptom of allergies or even asthma and it should be checked by a veterinarian immediately.
Treatment for Allergies
A veterinarian who specializes in dermatology can test your pet for allergies. Medications can assist with environmental issues, flea and tick medications can address flea allergies and a change in diet may be needed for food allergies.
